Leave Rome early in the morning for a journey through central and southern Italy dedicated to faith, history and two of the country’s most significant Christian pilgrimage destinations. Travel in comfort through changing landscapes, with a short stop along the way for coffee, breakfast or a snack before continuing toward the Gargano area.
Your first destination is San Giovanni Rotondo, the town forever associated with Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, better known around the world as Padre Pio. He spent much of his religious life here, and the town continues to welcome pilgrims who come to pray, reflect and learn more about his spiritual legacy. Visit the Shrine of Padre Pio, a modern sanctuary created to receive the large number of visitors drawn to this place of devotion.
Continue to the historic Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, closely connected with Padre Pio’s years in San Giovanni Rotondo. The church and the surrounding religious complex preserve places and relics associated with his daily life and ministry. There will be time to experience the atmosphere quietly, whether your interest is devotional, historical or personal. The visit is intentionally unhurried, allowing space for prayer and reflection before lunch at your leisure.
The journey then continues across the striking Gargano landscape toward Monte Sant’Angelo, a hill town with one of Europe’s oldest sanctuaries dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel has welcomed pilgrims since the early centuries of Christianity and is part of the UNESCO heritage connected with the Lombards in Italy.
Descend the long staircase into the sacred grotto, a natural cave around which centuries of worship, architecture and tradition have developed. According to Christian tradition, Saint Michael appeared here, and the sanctuary became an important stop for pilgrims traveling through medieval Europe. The atmosphere inside the grotto is unlike that of a conventional church: rock, silence and history create a powerful sense of continuity with generations of visitors who came before.
After the visit, begin the return journey to Rome. The day is demanding in distance but rewarding in meaning, bringing together the modern devotion surrounding Padre Pio and the ancient spiritual tradition of Monte Sant’Angelo in one carefully organized experience.
Please Note: The itinerary may vary according to the season, weather and traffic conditions, religious celebrations, local restrictions and operational requirements. The order and duration of the visits may be adjusted when necessary. Access to sanctuaries or devotional areas can be affected by liturgical services, pilgrimages or special religious events.
